Soundproof Doors
After leaky windows, the doors in your house are considered to be the biggest weak point in terms of sound pollution. An easy point of entry for nuisance noise – traditional doors were designed to keep the cold out, but not the noise. Soundproof doors have been designed to do both: blocking noise out by using soundproof materials for the door, glazing and frame – and offering greater thermal efficiency and lower heating bills, thanks to the gap-free fit between the frame and the door. A soundproof door will stop noise in its tracks so that it doesn’t enter your home, offering a significant reduction of noise of up to 45dB.
Specialist Soundproof Doors
Designed to stop sound both getting in or out, soundproof doors will help to block noise – whether that’s simply noise from the neighbours, right up to building a professional recording studio. There is a soundproof solution to suit every situation.
Soundproof French Doors
Soundproof French Doors are perfect for patios and gardens that open up to noisy environments. The designs will let lots of natural light into your home, whilst blocking out the sounds of overhead aircraft and other antisocial noise. The modern design looks clean and elegant, often adding considerable value to your property, and delivering top of the range security features.
Soundproof Folding Doors
Maximising on space and adding a new design element to your property, the Soundproof Folding Doors are installed on low-friction runners so that they open and close smoothly and quietly. With a multi-point locking system, you can sleep easy knowing your property is safe and secure – as well as free from noise disturbances.
Soundproof Sliding Doors
Highly recommended for properties where space is limited, the Soundproof Sliding Doors have been designed to neatly slide to the side when open for an unobtrusive and convenient option for smaller spaces. When closed, the Sliding Doors shut tight thanks to the specialised acoustic seals which have been designed to stop noise transference.
Soundproof Internal Doors & Units
The Soundproof Internal Doors have the same look and feel as your standard 2040mm units – however, they have been designed and manufactured using noise dampening techniques and materials. Custom installed using specialised seals, the Soundproof Internal Doors prevent noise from passing through the door or seeping around the frame.
Two-Door Systems
Professional or demanding environments – such as a professional recording studio, a home cinema or a club entrance – may require a two-door system for the most effective soundproofing. Two units are installed back-to-back, with one opening inwards and the other opening outwards. The air gap that is created between the two units will keep the noise you want in and will block unwanted noise out.

Doors and Sound
Doors have been designed, primarily, to prevent draughts and to keep your property safe, and so most traditional units are not manufactured with soundproofing in mind. A standard door will keep most moderate noise out – however, if the noise pollution is high or severe, then a soundproof door or custom unit is highly recommended to combat high levels of unwanted noise.
Soundproof doors are almost essential in places where sound is of primary concern – recording studios, pubs, bars and entertainment venues – however, residential properties can also benefit from specialist soundproof doors, particularly where the door’s design features a lot of glazing. Doors that include a lot of glass will suffer from the ‘coincidence frequency’ – the frequency at which the glass starts to act as a conductor of noise (within a certain range), amplifying the sound even further.
Types of Noise
Effective soundproofing requires a considered and personalised approach, as well as a solid understanding of your specific noise complaint. The devil is in the detail when it comes to soundproofing a property, especially with regards to the frequency of the noise source, and your proximity to it.
Aircraft Noise
Solutions for combatting aircraft noise will vary greatly depending on your distance from the flightpath, as well as whether the planes are landing or taking off, and even the type of aircraft that is passing overhead.
Road Traffic Noise
Road traffic noise changes depending on the type of traffic, as noise pollution on a sidestreet with speed bumps will differ greatly from the roar of the M25 or the Kings Road during rush hour.
Train Noise
The best solution for train noise will change depending on the proximity and location of the train track, i.e. it is above or below your property, and also whether the trains stop at a nearby station, if they are stopping or speeding up.
Anti-Social Noise
The noise source can vary dramatically when it comes to anti-social noise, including everything from the neighbour’s barking dog to the sounds of the local pub, bar or club and pedestrians walking by at all hours of the day and night.
How Soundproof Doors Work
A soundproof door works against noise by dampening and dissipating the soundwave, reducing its power and preventing it from entering your property. This can be achieved through a combination of the following materials and processes:
Soundproof Glazing
Using two different thicknesses of glass to combat the coincidence frequency, soundproof glazing is also laminated with a layer of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) to reduce the elasticity of the glass, further dampening the noise.
Acoustic Seals
High-performance acoustic seals are affixed to the door and the frame to plug any air gaps around the door through which sound can easily travel.
Air Gaps
In two-door systems an air cavity is created between the two units. If the air gap is more than 50mm deep, it will offer a dramatic improvement in acoustic insulation.
Runners
Soundproof sliding and folding doors use top-of-the-range runners which have been designed to ensure that there are no air gaps between the ceiling, floor and door. Soundproof runners also greatly reduce friction, which makes them easy to use.
If you are considering soundproofing your home, it is important to know that your soundproofing is only ever as effective as your weakest point. When soundproofing the doors of your home, you may also want to consider soundproofing other key areas for a more dramatic result:
